By Ray Hamill — Landon Gomes is headed to Butte College this fall, and on Saturday he showed why he will likely be a big success there.

The outgoing Ferndale High senior hit a game-changing two-RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning of a hard-fought matchup with the Sacramento Better Baseball to lead the Humboldt Eagles 19U to a 3-2 win.

It was the Eagles’ fourth win in two days, after earlier topping the same team 4-1, and Gomes has been instrumental in the fast start.

“That was just a big-time clutch performance out of him,” Eagles head coach Matt Tomlin said. “We saw that out of Landon in the second half of last season, and it shows he’s going to be a very good college player.”

Gomes was 2-for-3 in the win and now has five hits in two days.

He wasn’t the only standout performance on a talented Eagles team that features all-stars from seven of the nine H-DNL programs.

Jaden Gorge, who plays at Shasta College, was 3-for-3 in game one with his second double of the weekend, while Parker Rodgers showed why he’s one of the most improved players in the area over the past year, also finishing with three hits in the opener.

Fortuna’s Branson Gans also had two hits in game one and appears ready to play a big role with the team this summer.
