By Ray Hamill — Some College of the Redwoods football players found out on social media that the school’s football team had been cut after news of the decision leaked early Thursday morning.
Facing severe budgetary constraints in the wake of COVID-19, CR made the decision to eliminate the football and beach volleyball programs among other department cuts.
The news was scheduled to be released to the media at 10 a.m., but the story was leaked to at least one local news outlet, which published a story shortly after 9:30 a.m.
A number of the team’s players read the news online before their coaches had a chance to tell them in a scheduled team video meeting at 10 a.m.
The leak occurred after school president Keith Flamer sent a campus-wide email detailing the news shortly before 8 a.m., which was then forwarded to the local media.
