By Ray Hamill — For those who were in attendance, it was certainly an occasion and atmosphere they won’t easily forget.
On February 1, the Eureka boys traveled across town to play rivals St. Bernard’s in basketball and pulled away late for a 51-38 win.
The game was played in front of a packed and loud house on the same night as the Winter Formal, and on Saturday it was named the Game of the Year at the Logger ESPYs.
The annual awards, which are being handed out over a nine-day period, honor the school’s senior student athletes and are voted on by senior student athletes and coaches.
According to a Eureka High press release announcing the decision, “When a game falls on the same night as your school’s winter formal, what do you do? Go cheer on your team all dressed up and cheer!”
In Humboldt Sports’ end of season awards, we said the following about the game, “The Eureka fans’ performance at St. Bernard’s for the non-conference boys game in early February was one of the loudest and most impressive we’ve seen in this area in some time. Fans make the occasion more special, and no group did that better this season than the Loggers’ faithful that night.”
