By Ray Hamill — American Legion Baseball announced on Tuesday that all regional playoffs as well as the 19U World Series have been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
That, however, does not mean there won’t be a local season, with as many as six teams in Humboldt County expected to compete this summer.
According to Humboldt Eagles 19U head coach Matt Tomlin, right now the summer season remains up in the air, but has not been canceled.
“I think that’s going to be a club to club decision,” Tomlin said.
The local American Legion teams have fared very well in recent years, with the Eureka Eagles and Northern Humboldt Giants playing in the 17U state championship decider last season, which was won by the Eagles.
The Humboldt Eagles 19U also reached the final four of state play in 2019.
The Legion season has taken on added importance this summer due to the cancelation of the high school season.
