By Ray Hamill — A very good coaching staff just got a little better.
College of the Redwoods men’s basketball announced this week that sophomore Blake Rossman will join the coaching staff for next season.
The Hoopa native, who contributed some valuable minutes off the bench on this year’s team, will join head coach Ryan Bisio and assistants Taylor Morrow and Justin Claus.
“I felt that throughout the year he exhibited a natural leadership ability, and he really believes in the way we want to play,” Bisio said of Rossman. “I think it’ll be a great fit.”
Rossman graduated Hoopa in 2017 and joined the Corsairs a year later, playing on the winless team of 2018/19.
He returned this past season to play for Bisio and his staff in their first year in charge, providing valuable depth off the bench on the way to winning the Golden Valley Conference.
His addition to the coaching staff, according to Bisio, will give the coaches one more set of eyes as they try to coach a talented team to the maximum capability.
“The players respect him,” Bisio said. “He was an absolute joy to coach, and he has a really high basketball IQ.”
Bisio added that Rossman showed a lot of faith in the coaches in coming back after a disappointing season last year.
“It’s our way of rewarding him for the leap of faith he put in us,” Bisio said. “Coming off a really rough year it took a lot of courage to come back and a lot of trust.”
