By Ray Hamill — A number of local sporting events scheduled for this weekend have been canceled due to the ongoing concerns over COVID-19, including Saturday’s high school track and field meet, which was set for McKinleyville High.
One day after both College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State announced the cancelation of all spring sports indefinitely, several more local events were called off on Friday.
In addition to the track and field meet, Eureka, Fortuna and Arcata all had games canceled in softball because of travel restrictions for their opponents, as did Fortuna baseball.
The Eureka Loggers, however, are scheduled to host St. Bernard’s in softball on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m., in a game being pushed back from Saturday due to the weather.
All 10 section commissioners in the CIF are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to make a decision on what to do with high school spring sports.
It appears more and more likely, however, that there will be a suspension of all local sports for the next few weeks.
The Lumberjacks did receive some good news on Friday when it was announced that spring sport student athletes will be given an additional season of eligibility.
