Former Arcata standout Vanessa Holland nailed a game-winning 3-pointer in the final minute of Thursday night’s women’s basketball game at Lumberjack Arena, as Chico State rallied for a 70-67 win over Humboldt State.
The visitors overcame a slow start and a 17-point deficit with a big second half, with Holland’s late heroics securing the win.
The junior guard finished with eight points on her return to the North Coast, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining, which put her team up 68-67.
The Wildcats added two late free throws, while holding the Jacks scoreless down the stretch.
Holland also had three rebounds and three assists in the win, as Chico improved to 13-8 in the conference standings and takes over sole possession of fourth spot with one game remaining.
HSU’s Tyra Turner finished with five assists in the loss, giving her 510 for her career, which ties the all-time school record by Trina Dukes set in the early 1990s.
With the loss, the Jacks close out conference play 11-11 and will finish in either seventh or eighth place in the final standings, giving them a road game to open next week’s conference tournament.
