By Ray Hamill — Quick thinking paid off for former Humboldt State football player Jason Uipi on Friday night, as the Lumberjacks hosted Cal Maritime in rugby under the lights at the Redwood Bowl.
Uipi, who played defensive tackle for the Jacks in their final season of football, has found a new home on the rugby field, making his presence felt on Friday.
The HSU men would eventually lose the game to the perennially tough Keelhaulers by a score of 14-10, with mistakes and some sloppy ball handling proving costly.
Uipi, however, provided one of the bright spots, scoring a try right at the end of the first half as a period of sustained pressure paid off for the home team.
The quick-thinking hooker caught the visitors off guard by taking a penalty to himself and diving in for the try.
Check out Uipi’s quick reaction in our video highlights.
Despite the loss, the Jacks (2-1) remain in a three-way tie with Santa Rosa JC (2-1) and Cal Maritime (2-1) at the top of the conference, with an upcoming game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
