Eureka, Del Norte lead local charge at NCS wrestling

As expected, the Del Norte boys and Eureka girls are leading the local charge after day one at the North Coast Section wrestling championships.

Both teams are placed fifth overall, with several wrestlers from each squad still undefeated heading into the quarterfinal round.

The Del Norte boys, who won the H-DNL championship last weekend, have five grapplers competing in the quarterfinals, including Blake Allen (126 pounds), Chaz Harrison (132), Nolan Ridgley (138), Skyler Moore (145) and Brandon Jones (195), each of whom is 2-0 after the opening day.

At 138 pounds, Ridgley is joined in the quarterfinals by Fortuna’s Andrew Hansen, who is one of three Huskies to start out 2-0.

Teammate Levi Nyberg will also compete in the quarterfinals at 152 pounds, while Fortuna’s Luciano Medina is one of two H-DNL wrestlers still unbeaten at 285, along with Arcata’s Maximus Rice.

A second Arcata wrestler, Marley Harris, also qualified for the quarterfinals at 120, as did McKinleyville’s Skyler Hicks at 182, giving the H-DNL 11 boys still unbeaten.

The boys tournament is taking place at James Logan High.

The girls tournament, meanwhile, is being held at Albany High, with six Loggers qualifying for the quarterfinals, along with one Warrior, Danika Scott at 235.

Eureka’s Yareli Rendon-Gomez went 2-0 on the opening day at 131, while teammates Slate Delsman (121), Kelli Johnston (143), Evelyn Lopez-Mata (150) and Helena Rogers (170) each are 1-0 after the opening day.
