By Ray Hamill — The Corsairs were handed a lifeline in their pursuit of a Golden Valley Conference championship in women’s basketball after Lassen’s upset win over Butte on Wednesday night.

Any chance of a championship appeared to have slipped away after the College of the Redwoods women lost a pivotal top-of-the-table clash at Butte on Saturday, dropping a game behind the Roadrunners in the standings with just two games remaining each.

Butte’s 75-71 loss at Lassen, however, leaves both teams with two losses heading into the final few days of conference play.

Butte, which has one game left, remains top of the standings with a 7-2 record, with CR (6-2) half a game back.

Wins for the Corsairs at home to Feather River (3-5) on Saturday and Shasta (1-7) next Wednesday will guarantee them at least a share of the conference championship.

If both teams finish tied in the standings, they will be crowned co-champions, with their head-to-head record used to determine the higher seed for the playoffs.

CR and Butte split their two conference matchups this season, with each team winning on its home court, so if they tie for the championship a coin toss will decide which gets the higher seed.

The Butte women host Feather River in their conference finale next Wednesday.
