The Fortuna Huskies will tip off the Big 5 as the hottest prep basketball team on the North Coast, improving to 14-1 on Saturday with their eighth straight win.
After posting back-to-back overtime wins the previous two days, the Fortuna girls rolled to a relatively easy 51-25 victory over the host school in the championship game at the Las Plumas tournament.
It was the Huskies’ third tournament championship of the season.
“The coaching staff is really proud of the girls,” first-year head coach Scott Betts said.
Charlotte Carroll closed out a big tournament with a team-high 10 points in the win and was named tourney MVP.
Moncerrat Bernal added nine points, and was also named all-tournament.
Defense, however, has set the tone all season for the Huskies, who are allowing an average of just 32 points a game.
They open what is expected to be a very competitive Big 5 at home to McKinleyville on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
