By Ray Hamill — Humboldt State’s Alexia Thrower continued her impressive season on the basketball court over the weekend, leading the Jacks in a pair of games.
Thrower had back-to-back double-doubles, giving her five on the season, and that makes her one of our athletes of the week.
Another local college standout, Isaac Puzz, also had a big weekend, earning tourney MVP honors for College of the Redwoods men’s basketball at the Santa Rosa tournament after hitting six 3-pointers on back-to-back nights.
And that gets him the nod for our second athlete of the week.
As for team of the week honors, could it really be any other team this week?
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
CR Basketball, Freshman
Puzz finished with season-highs in points on back-to-back nights and took full advantage of his first start of the year on Saturday, helping the Corsairs to an impressive tourney championship.
The former McKinleyville High standout has gotten stronger as the season has gone on and made a strong case for more minutes with a big weekend.

HSU Basketball, Senior
Thrower has been nothing short of sensational in her senior campaign for the impressive HSU women.
The Las Vegas native is averaging a double-double with 21.2 points and 10.5 rebounds a game, and continued to lead the way for the Jacks in two games over the weekend, finishing with 36 points and 22 rebounds.
Thrower and the HSU women will play at Chico State on Saturday.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
St. Bernard’s Football
The Crusaders are state champions for the second time in five seasons after beating South High 34-20 at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday night.
It was a thrilling win and one that places this year’s St. Bernard’s team among the most successful all-time here on the North Coast.
Congratulations to head coach Matt Tomlin, his staff and all the players for their remarkable achievement.
