By Ray Hamill — A pair of seniors played big roles for their respective teams over the weekend, and that earns them the nod for this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week.
Eureka’s Sophia Chalmers continued her very impressive start to the basketball season by leading the Loggers to a tournament championship at Piner, and was named tourney MVP for her efforts.
Farther from home, St. Bernard’s quarterback Will Omey played a pivotal role in leading the Crusaders to a state bowl game, accounting for six touchdowns in a CIF Regional playoff win against East Nicolaus in Yuba City.
And that win was also enough to earn the Crusaders our co-team of the week honors, along with the Del Norte Warriors, after historic weekends for both in football.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Eureka Basketball, Senior
Chalmers has been inspirational for an impressive Loggers team through the early season, and scored 40 points in three wins at the Piner tournament over the weekend, including 19 against Petaluma on Friday.
The Eureka senior also stepped up big late in the tournament opener against Maria Carrillo, scoring four points in the final 90 seconds to lead the Loggers back from a late six-point deficit.
Chalmers and the Loggers are now 6-1.

St. Bernard’s Football, Senior
Omey wasn’t the only hero for the Crusaders in Friday night’s state playoff win, but he was their catalyst.
The senior QB, who is enjoying a stellar senior campaign and leads the entire NCS in total offensive yards, was instrumental once again against East Nicolaus, accounting for six touchdowns, three through the air and three with his feet.
Omey finished with 325 yards passing and 147 yards rushing and this is the second time this season he has been named one of our athletes of the week.
He is also the first three-time winner of the award.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK
St. Bernard’s Football and Del Norte Football
For the second straight weekend there was no separating this season’s two H-DNL frontrunners, who each followed an NCS championship with a state playoff win.
And that sends both of these schools on to a state bowl game this coming weekend, the first time the H-DNL has sent two teams to play for a state championship.
Both of these teams have been consistently brilliant all year long and they continue to be so.
