Former H-DNL standout Sophie Northern had her best offensive night in two seasons with Sonoma State on Thursday, scoring 19 points in a 64-58 loss at Humboldt State.
Northern, an Arcata High graduate, added five rebounds in the loss, as the Seawolves dropped to 3-2 on the young season.
Northern joined the HSU program right out of high school, but as she told Humboldt Sports earlier this year it just wasn’t the right fit for her.
She transferred to College of the Redwoods as a sophomore, before joining Sonoma State as a junior and having an immediate impact with the Seawolves.
Last season she averaged 10.8 points a game, second best on the team.
Alexia Thrower led the way for the Jacks in the win, scoring a season-high 33 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Gabrielle Carbajal added 13 points, as the Jacks improved to 3-1 on the season.
“It’s certainly good to start off conference with a win,” said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. “Gabby and Lex made great plays down the stretch and Lex stepped up big in knocking down free throws.”
The game was the conference opener for both teams.
The HSU women will host Cal State Los Angeles in another early conference game on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.

The visiting Seawolves outscored the Jacks 46-28 in the second half to seal a come-from-behind win.
Four HSU players scored in double digits, including Rob Lewis (20), Isaiah Pope (17), Amari Green (12) and Zachariah Christian (11).
“We need to be ready to compete from tip-off,” said head coach Steve Kinder. “Our ability to sustain good possessions defensively and offensively need to get better to compete in the CCAA.”
The HSU men will host Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
