Six Rivers Youth Football playoffs heating up

By Ray Hamill — Seven different local youth football programs will be represented on the penultimate weekend of the season, with six games on tap to decide who reaches the championship games.

The Six Rivers Youth Football playoffs got under way last weekend, with the lower seeds in each bracket in action, and the winners of those games will be joined by the top two seeds in each bracket on Sunday.

Two triple-headers will be held, one at Ferndale High and one at the Redwood Fields in Cutten, with the action getting under way at 9:30 a.m. at each venue.

All three Ferndale teams will be in action in the Cream City, after each enjoyed an opening week bye.

In single-A the No. 2 seed Mustangs are 6-1 and will host No. 3 Del Norte, which is 5-3 after shutting out Eureka 26-0 last weekend.

In AA, the Mustangs (7-1) are also seeded No. 2 and will host No. 3 Redwood (7-2), which is fresh off a 12-0 win over Del Norte.

And in AAA, the No. 1 Mustangs are 6-1 and will host No. 5 Eel River, which is 4-4 after upsetting the odds against No. 4 Eureka by a score of 12-6.

In Cutten, six different programs will make up the triple-header, showcasing the competitive nature of this year’s conference.

At single-A, No. 1 Eel River (7-0) will put its unbeaten run on the line against No. 5 Redwood (4-4), which defeated McKinleyville 12-0 in its playoff opener.

In AA, No. 1 Eureka (7-1) will play No. 4 Hoopa (5-4), which is coming off a big 48-7 win over Del Norte last weekend.

And in AAA, No. 2 McKinleyville (6-1) will play No. 3 Del Norte Gold (6-3), which beat Redwood 11-0 last weekend.

Both AA games start at noon, while both AAA games get under way at 2:30 p.m.
