What’s at stake, and all the permutations ahead of big soccer showdown

By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL will essentially be decided in girls soccer on Saturday, as leaders Fortuna head to Albee Stadium to play closest challengers Eureka in the penultimate league game for each.

The Huskies are undefeated in league play with a record of 9-0-1, while the Loggers are 8-1-1, with the two teams tying two weeks ago at Fortuna.

The Huskies, who host the McKinleyville Panthers on Wednesday, need just one win in either of their final two games to claim at least a share of the title, while a win over Eureka would guarantee them the title outright.

A tie would also give the Huskies at least a share of the title with one game still remaining, which would leave them in good position heading into the finale.

For Eureka, anything short of a win on Saturday would likely see the championship slip away for the two-time defending champions.

If the Loggers win, they will likely end up sharing the championship, and both teams would be equal on points heading into their league finale, which each will be expected to win.

Saturday’s game is set to go ahead regardless of the power outage situation, and kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The two schools also play in a boys soccer game at 1 p.m. at the same location, with the Huskies needing just a tie to claim the league title outright.

A 1-1 tie at home to Arcata on Wednesday was enough to secure at least a share of the H-DNL crown for the Huskies, their seventh straight championship.
