By Ray Hamill — Junior Hayden Bode got his second start at quarterback for the Eureka Loggers last weekend, scoring a pair of touchdowns in muddy conditions at Albee Stadium.

As of Wednesday afternoon, starter Trevor Bell is still listed as day-to-day, with no official word as to who will start under center for Eureka’s big crosstown showdown at St. Bernard’s on Saturday.

If Bell is unable to return in time from a rolled ankle suffered in practice two weeks ago, Bode is in line to get his third straight start at quarterback.

And while the junior struggled at Chico two weeks ago, he was far more effective in Saturday’s 22-14 loss to Fortuna, running in for a par of TDs, including one from 26 yards out.

“He played well,” Eureka head coach Jason White said of Bode. “He scored two touchdowns in pretty adverse conditions. It was hard to throw the ball, so we were pretty limited in that way.”

As with any young quarterback, the more playing time he gets, the more Bode will continue to develop.

“He’s becoming a lot more comfortable with the offense and what we’re doing,” White said.

Bode’s TDs helped lead the Loggers back from a 14-0 halftime deficit early in the fourth quarter, but the visiting Huskies had the final say when quarterback Daeden Taylor connected with receiver Max Hough for the winning TD pass with just nine seconds remaining.

Despite the heartbreaker, there was plenty of positives for the Loggers, including some big highlights.

Check out both of Bode’s TDs here, as well as a key 57-yard gain by running back Keeb Her and an interception by Josiah Graham, one of two second-half takeaways the latter had.
