The South Fork Cubs took a big step towards a third straight undefeated league campaign with a 38-22 win over Laytonville in their homecoming game on Friday night.
The Cubs have not lost a game in the NCL-III since switching to eight person football three years ago.
They had to battle for this one, however, against a physical Laytonville team that came ready to play.
“It was actually a pretty hard-fought game,” South Fork head coach Karl Terrell said. “They came to hit and it felt like old-time football. I loved it.”
The Cubs had their chances early, but were tied 8-8 at halftime after fumbling twice and dropping a catch in the end zone.
They scored on their opening drive of the third quarter to take the lead and gradually pulled away after that, with the visitors scoring a pair of late TDs for a more flattering final score.
A young Cubs team is now 5-2 on the season and has grown in stature this fall.
They can complete a third straight undefeated league campaign with a victory at winless Potter Valley next weekend.
Against Laytonville, junior Alex Harding continued to lead the way, finishing with 155 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving, as well as three touchdowns.
Sean Hassall-Hoss also had a big game at quarterback, completing nine of 17 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, as well as running for 98 yards and two more TDs.
Senior Ian Burton continued his impressive season with three catches for 38 yards and a TD, while also finishing with eight tackles.
Sophomore twins Caleb and Zech each had a big impact on defense with 11 tackles apiece, while the Cubs welcomed back junior Riley Gallagher, who broke his collar bone in the preseason and looked good on his return.
