Levi Cox Cooley ran for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Del Norte Warriors got back to winning ways and took the first of two games against Fortuna this season, 29-13 in Crescent City on Friday night.
Cox Cooley had a career game behind another dominating performance by the Del Norte line, which has been setting a physical tone all season.
The junior running back added 55 yards receiving and had about 400 total yards including returns.
“He reads his blocks so well,” Del Norte head coach Nick White said. “And he makes people miss.”
Fortuna took a first-quarter lead on a Kobe Letter TD run, but managed little offense for the night, less than 100 yards, according to the Del Norte coaches.
“We played very well defensively,” White said.
In particular, middle linebacker Tanner Forkner frustrated the visitors all night long.
OJ Calleja and Giovanni Gonzalez each added a TD run for the Warriors, who are now 5-1 and quickly put last week’s loss at Mazama behind them.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Del Norte, however, with far too many mistakes on the offensive side of the ball.
“Offensively we drove the ball when we needed to, but we had three turnovers and 150 yards in penalties, so that set us back,” White said.
Fortuna quarterback Daeden Taylor connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Regan Nyberg late in the game.
Next week, Del Norte travels to Trinity, while Fortuna will host Stellar Prep.
Fortuna dropped to 1-4.
