By Ray Hamill — Saturday afternoon’s girls soccer game between the Loggers and Tigers at Arcata High produced several big moments, most notably the goals in what was a 2-0 win for the visiting Eureka girls.

The victory, however, was not secured until the dying seconds, when Keylei Carroll headed the winner off a wonderfully placed corner kick from teammate Brynn Hales.

Hales was involved in both goals, having earlier set up Aquene Tollesfon to give Eureka the lead.

The Tigers to their credit battled all the way, continually pressuring the defending league champions, who have not lost an H-DNL game in more than two years.

In particular, freshman Thea Trout came closest to tying the game on a well-taken free kick, only to be denied by an outstanding diving stop by Eureka goalie Kyra Watkins.

The senior shot stopper kept her team in front with the save at a key stage of the game, just as the home team was threatening.

Both teams will be back in action this Wednesday, with Eureka heading to McKinleyville and Arcata hosting South Fork.
