By Ray Hamill — It was a tough start to the H-DNL for the McKinleyville girls soccer team, which fell 5-0 to Eureka at Albee Stadium on Wednesday.
But it wasn’t all bad news for the Panthers, who enjoyed an outstanding league debut from freshman goalie Taya Gomes.
The newcomer was under a lot of pressure for much of the night, but made a series of big stops against the defending league and North Coast Section champions.
“My keeper played an amazing game,” Mack head coach Adam Canepa said afterwards. “She must have had 20 saves.”
Playing in her first ever H-DNL game, Gomes’ heroics inspired her teammates, who lifted their collective game after the break, holding the potent Loggers attack scoreless for the second half.
Check out some of Gomes’ saves, in particular the triple save she pulls off at the end of the highlights.
The McKinleyville girls play at South Fork next Wednesday.
