Tigers, Huskies get new CC season off to a flying start

A pair of local prep cross country teams got their seasons off to a flying start at the Brookings Harbor Invitational on Saturday, with several impressive individual performances by both Arcata and Fortuna.

The Tigers and Huskies took the top two team spots in each competition, with Fortuna edging Arcata by just one point in a tight boys competition, 35-36.

On the girls side, the Tigers took the top three individual spots on the way to a comfortable team win, scoring 17 points, with Fortuna second (45 points).

Individually, Fortuna junior Collin Stockwell took first in the boys competition, finishing the 5K in a time of 17 minutes, 19.49 seconds, 15 seconds ahead of the chasing pack.

Arcata’s Jude Ortega (17:36.17) was third, one spot ahead of teammate Miles Johnson (17:58.89).

Three teams were competing at the event, including the host school.

In the girls competition, Arcata freshman Ai-Lan McGoldrick had a very impressive high school debut, timing a 20:41.87 for first, 13 seconds ahead of teammate Vivian Gerstein in second.

Tatiana Edmonds was third, followed by Fortuna’s Maggie Stacy in fourth and another Arcata freshman, Alauna Thompson in fifth.

Arcata had four freshmen in the top 10.
