By Ray Hamill — The St. Bernard’s Crusaders put up a lot of offense against Arcata on Saturday afternoon, but it was the team defense that laid the foundation for another dominating victory.
With the win, the Crusaders improved to 3-0, having now outscored their opponents by a combined 124-29.
Only Hoopa has scored double digits against the SB defense, which has been swarming to the ball and not allowing opposing offenses to settle.
And head coach Matt Tomlin had special praise for the unit after Saturday’s 49-8 win, and special praise for the job defensive coordinator Richard Stevenson has done.
“Offensively I think people expected us to be explosive this year and we have been so far, but I think so far this has been the best defensive performance we’ve had in years,” Tomlin said. “Our defense is just flying around the field and tackling and getting turnovers, and coach Stevenson is just absolutely doing an amazing job with the defense.”
Check out some of Saturday’s defensive highlights, including Lane Thrap’s big interception return for a touchdown.
The Crusaders will try to keep the early momentum going when they travel to Oregon to play La Salle on Friday night.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the kids,” Tomlin added. “And coach Stevenson for the job he’s doing as a defensive coach.”
