By Ray Hamill — Four of the nine local high school football teams posted their first win of the season on Friday night, giving each of them some much-needed momentum going forward.
All four were impressive for a number of reasons and all four come at an important time of the campaign as each of these programs looks to build an identity for the season.
Which do you think was the most impressive from a group of teams that were a combined 0-6 heading into the weekend?
Was it Fortuna’s big win at Kelseyville, where the Huskies were playing their third straight road game and dominated in the trenches against a Knights team that had rolled over Ukiah the previous week?
Or perhaps a young and injury-plagued South Fork team that overcame a rough start to the season against Cornerstone two weeks ago by beating Round Valley 56-6?
Or maybe McKinleyville, which gave up an 80-yard TD run on the opening kickoff of the game, but answered in perfect fashion with a dominating defensive performance against a quality Fort Bragg program, on the way to a 21-15 victory?
Or even the Ferndale Wildcats, who showed plenty of character late in their game at Fall River, answering the call in the fourth quarter when the momentum was slipping away, on the way to grounding out a 36-14 win?
All four were impressive in their own way and all four will give their teams a big boost at a crucial part of the season.
