Submitted photo – From left to right, Sofie Sundberg, Isabella Sundberg, Phoebe Sundberg and Emma Sundberg are all playing for McKinleyville this season.
It was a good day for the Sundbergs and a good day for Arcata girls golf, as the new Humboldt-Del Norte League season got under way at Benbow on Thursday.
McKinleyville senior Phoebe Sundberg, one of four Sundbergs playing for the Panthers this season, shot an 82 to tie for best round of the day with Arcata’s Avary Henry.
Junior Isabella Sundberg was third best on the day with a round of 92.
Henry’s top round, however, coupled with the Tigers’ depth and a strong showing from several of her teammates was enough to give Arcata the team win.
Arcata’s Brook Bisgrove (110), Kate Plumley (113) and Mari Pepper (115) rounded out the top five, followed by teammates Levi Avila (125) and Iris Coonrod (126).

Eureka’s Marissa Highley also shot a 126.
The Arcata girls took the team win with a score of 420, followed by McKinleyville (457), Eureka (540), Fortuna (560) and St. Bernard’s (613).
McKinleyville freshmen Sophie Sundberg (128) and Emma Sundberg (155) also competed for the Panthers and are cousins of Phoebe and Isabella, giving McKinleyville a large family contingent this season.
The H-DNL plays at Eureka next Thursday.
