Hartnell College not only beat the heat but the rest of the field as well, taking first as a team in both the men’s and women’s races at Saturday’s College of the Redwoods meet.
The Corsairs hosted the season-opening Beat the Heat Race, with the CR men placing second to Hartnell in the men’s competition, led by a seventh-place finish from Kaleb Trificante.
Hartnell took five of the top six individual spots in the men’s four-mile race, led by Jesus Avalos, who was first in a time of 22 minutes, 24.02 seconds.
Trificante timed a 22:59.10.
Next best finisher for CR among the six colleges competing was Josh Hunt, who was 15th in a time of 25:14.11.
CR’s Ryan Waite was 21st, with Alejandro Osorio 23rd and Infallible Asenbauer in 26th.
The women’s 5K race was won by Daniela Salazar in a time of 23:36.97, as Hartnell took seven of the top eight spots.
Hailey Hopkins paced CR in 15th in a time of 27:33.71.
Teammate Abigael Gulley was 30th.
Butte, Siskiyous, Shasta and SWOCC each also competed.
