By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors set themselves up for this week’s opener with a solid display at the weekend scrimmage at Albee Stadium.

The Warriors, who feature a new head coach this season, set the tone early in the three-team scrimmage, which also featured hosts Eureka and Fortuna.

“I thought we executed and we were physical, and that was the big thing going in for us,” said head coach Nick White, who takes over this year from the departed Lewis Nova after serving as an assistant coach with the program for much of the past decade. “That’s a big part of what we wanted to get accomplished.

“We saw a lot of good stuff, and obviously we saw stuff we have to correct.”

The Warriors, who were 9-3 a year ago and made it to the second round of the North Coast Section playoffs, won’t be taking anybody by surprise this fall after a breakout season in 2018.

Del Norte will be tested right off the bat at Moreau Catholic on Friday night. The Mariners were 12-1 a year ago.

The Warriors then return home for back-to-back games against Yreka and La Salle, before traveling to Petaluma, which was added to the schedule this year.

And training camp has been productive for the team, according to White.

“It’s been good,” he said. “We’re getting the kids on track as far as what our goals are and what we want to accomplish. We’re just focusing on getting better every day and becoming a family to where everybody trusts each other.”
