By Ray Hamill — With their season opener just one week away, the Eureka Loggers appear to be finding their feet.

On Friday evening, the Loggers hosted a three-team scrimmage at Albee Stadium against both Fortuna and Del Norte, giving the home fans a first opportunity to see a very new-look team that features just three returning full-time starters.

And early signs were positive.

“I felt good about it,” Eureka head coach Jason White said. “Our goal was to come out and be physical and execute and I thought we did that for 75 percent of the time.”

White admitted his players faded a little toward the end, and said that will serve as a learning experience for a relatively inexperienced roster.

There were plenty of positive signs, most notably the play of quarterback Trevor Bell and the offense.

Bell got good protection and completed a number of big plays, with receiver Josiah Graham and tight end Chase “Biscuit” Steubing pulling in some big catches and both finding the end zone.

Graham’s scoring catch was particularly impressive, with a number of College of the Redwoods players nearby applauding the effort.

Bell also displayed his running ability and speed while rushing for a first down on another play.

“I was very happy with both our quarterbacks,” White said. “I thought (back-up) Hayden Bode performed well also.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Loggers gave up little to their league opponents.

“Defensively, I thought we rallied to the ball really well,” the head coach said. “We broke coverage a couple of times, but that happens at this time of the year.”

The Loggers open the season at home to Placer next Friday night.
