Steelheads continue their winning ways in San Diego

The Northern Humboldt Steelheads 13U baseball team completed an unbeaten run through pool play at the USSSA World Series in San Diego on Thursday with two more wins.

The 4-0 Steelheads defeated the Hilo Diamondbacks 9-5 and the Scottsdale Scorpions 10-2 and earned the No. 2 seed for the weekend playoffs in their AA bracket.

Del Norte’s Brody Mattz and Arcata’s Cedar Cline, Miles Oliver and Noah York each pitched well in the two wins.

Cline also drove in the go-ahead run against the Diamondbacks with a two-run single.

York, Jade Lack, Matteo Copp and Lorenzo Solares each had multiple hits in the win.

Copp, who is enjoying a big tournament, almost hit his second grand slam in two days against Scottsdale, but had to settle for a bases-clearing double.

Cline, Solares and Mattz also had multiple hits in the win.

Steelheads win playoff game

On Saturday afternoon, the Steelheads got the better of Hilo for the second time at the tournament to open the playoffs, winning 14-2 in four innings.

York and Matt Dashner combined on the mound to hold the Hilo bats to just two hits.

Mattz led the offense, scoring five runs and finishing with two hits and three RBIs, as the Steelheads stole nine bases, including a steal home by Kenyon Sanders.

Lack also had a pair of hits, while Dashner had a triple.

The win was the 10th straight for the Steelheads who will play the Arizona Junior Diamondbacks on Sunday morning for the right to play in the USSSA World Series on Sunday afternoon.
