The Mad River MIST 12U girls were 1-2 in pool play at a tournament in Sacramento on Saturday, getting off to a flying start with a 4-0 win before dropping back-to-back games.
The MIST lost a close one to Centennial Travel Club 5-4, before falling 12-2 to Foothill Gold in large part because of some defensive lapses.
Savannah Johnson had a big day at the plate for the MIST girls, finishing with two hits in game one, as they took control of the contest with three runs in the third inning.
Kaitlin Giacone also had a hit in the win.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair that looked likely to go to the team which went to bat last.
Trailing by two, the MIST scored three times in the bottom of the first to take the lead, only to give up two more runs in the second and then tie things up again in the third.
Johnson was instrumental again at the plate, finishing with two more hits, including a double, while teammates Alexis Heuberger and Makenna Curtis each also had a hit.
Game three got away from the MIST when some defensive miscues led to nine runs for Foothill in the bottom of the first.
Johnson closed out a big day with another hit, while Isabella Sanchez was 1-for-1.
The MIST will continue tournament play on Sunday.
