The Mad River MIST 16U girls responded from an opening day loss at the NAFA Nationals in Newberg, Oregon, on Thursday, with two wins on Friday, outscoring their two opponents by a combined 23-1 in fast-pitch softball.
The MIST defeated the Gresham Vengeance 11-1 and followed that with a quick 12-0 win over Tigers Rage in the nightcap, with pitchers Makayla Bernald and Mikayla Minton combining for a two-hitter in the opener and Hoopa’s Savannah Colegrove throwing three hitless innings for the win in game two.
Bernald and Ashley Ballew each had a big day at the plate, finishing with a pair of hits in both games, including a double and a triple by Bernald in game one.
Three of Ballew’s hits were doubles and she also drove in four runs over the two games.
Mckenna Beach also had a big couple of days, finishing with two hits in game one on Friday, while Raina Ausburn, Sadie Hampton and Colegrove each doubled in that game.
Lexi White added a triple and three RBIs in the nightcap.
On Thursday, the MIST girls defeated the Racine Diamond Dusters 6-0 to open the tournament before falling 7-5 to Rijo.
Beach had three hits on the day, including a triple in the opener and a home run in the loss, while Minton got the tournament off to an impressive start, with a 3-for-3 effort in the opener.
Jackie Heuberger also homered in game one, and finished with three RBIs.
