Corsairs, B52s preparing for annual dinner/auctions

By Ray Hamill — College of the Redwoods will honor former football player/wrestler Dan Phillips at the school’s 16th annual sports auction/dinner, one of two big upcoming fundraising events for local sports.

The Humboldt B52s will also hold their fourth annual auction/dinner at the Elks Lodge in Eureka, celebrating another successful season on the diamond while fundraising to keep the tradition going.600600p18255EDNmainimg-Sports-Auction-Poster-2019_39637_PRO

Both events will be held in early August, with the B52s hosting on the first day of the month and the Corsairs on the 8th.

The CR fundraiser, which benefits the Corsair student athletes and their programs exclusively, will be held at the school gymnasium and will feature a silent auction, dinner and speakers.

Phillips, who competed for the Corsairs from 1976 to 1978, wrestled and played football both years and will be the featured speaker at the event, which gets under way at 5:30 p.m.

Phillips, who also competed in both sports at Fortuna High, returned to CR in 1985 and completed a second AA degree in Computer Science. He went on to graduate from HSU in 1991 with degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration.

Since then, he has enjoyed a very successful career in the tech industry, moving to Silicon Valley where he has held several executive positions in the industry and is now the Chief Technology Officer for Hulu.

In Wrestling, he was ranked fourth in small JC state.

He would go on to coach wrestling and football at Fortuna High from 1979 to 1984.

Tickets for the event are $600 for a table of 10, or $500 for a table of eight, or $65 per person, and can be purchased by calling the CR athletic department at 476-4213.

The B52s, meanwhile, are in the midst of another stellar season and getting ready to host the Ukiah Hawks in a three-game series this weekend.

Their fundraiser dinner/auction, which gets under way at 5:30 p.m., will feature both a live and silent auction, as well as food, beverages, games, raffles, entertainment and an awards ceremony.

Tickets are $50 per person or $350 for a table of eight.
