By Ray Hamill — The weather continues to affect the North Coast Section playoff schedule in both baseball and softball this week, with several games being switched.

Some teams like Arcata softball, are still waiting to get their opening-round games in after a number of postponements throughout the NCS on Wednesday, while others have had their weekend games either moved forward or back.

Four of the 10 H-DNL teams still involved are scheduled to play on Friday, while the other six are still waiting to see who their next opponents will be, let alone when they may play.

In Division-V baseball, No. 2 St. Bernard’s will host No. 7 Branson on Friday at 5 p.m., as the Crusaders’ bracket remains the only one involving local teams that is still on schedule.

In softball, Arcata, Hoopa and St. Bernard’s are all also scheduled to play on Friday.

In Division IV, No. 6 Arcata will play an opening-round game against No. 11 Berean Christian at Arcata High in a game pushed back from Wednesday.

In Division V, meanwhile, both Hoopa and St. Bernard’s have had their games moved forward from Saturday, with the No. 2 Warriors hosting No. 7 University, and the No. 5 Crusaders traveling to play at No. 4 Clear Lake.

All of Friday’s softball games are set for 5 p.m.

Pushed back

The Eureka, McKinleyville and South Fork softball teams each had their Saturday games pushed back to Monday as they wait on their opponents to play their opening-round games.

In Division III, No. 5 Eureka claimed a first NCS win in five years at home to San Rafael in a fast and close 2-1 game on Tuesday, giving the Loggers 20 wins in a single season for the first time in at least 15 years.

The Eureka girls may get to host a second game if No. 13 Encinal can upset No. 4 St. Joseph Notre Dame on Friday.

In Division IV, the Panthers are enjoying a season for the ages, having won both the Big 5 and H-DNL tournament, but will have to wait to play their NCS opener.

The No. 2 Mack girls had an opening-round bye and will now play either No. 7 Piedmont or No. 10 Kennedy at home on Monday evening.

In Division VI, the No. 1 Cubs are the defending champions and will play the winner of Emery and Potter Valley, also on Monday.

In the hunt

In baseball, meanwhile, three other H-DNL teams remain in the hunt in addition to St. Bernard’s.

McKinleyville, Arcata and South Fork each had opening-round byes and are still waiting to see who they will play, as well as when they’ll play.

All three were scheduled to open at home on Saturday, but all three games have been postponed with no official date yet set.

Mack and Arcata are the top two seeds in Division IV, respectively, while South Fork is both the defending Division-VI champion and No. 1 seed.

The Panthers will play either Redwood Christian or Kelseyville, while Arcata will play either Piedmont or Lick Wilmerding, and South Fork either San Francisco Waldorf or San Domenico.

All of Monday’s games, in fact, could yet be postponed a second time with rain forecast for much of the day.
