Hoopa girls set up championship decider

File photo – Hoopa senior Alexia Jackson and her teammates will compete for a second straight Little 4 championship in a doubleheader against St. Bernard’s next week.

The Hoopa valley girls set up a title deciding softball doubleheader against St. Bernard’s next week after beating South Fork twice at home on Tuesday.

The Warriors, who are defending Little 4 champions, won 5-0 and 8-2.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Warriors improved to 8-2 in the Little 4, and now trail St. Bernard’s (8-1) by half a game.

The two frontrunners will meet in a doubleheader at Hoopa on Thursday of next week, with the league title guaranteed to be up for grabs no matter how the Crusaders fare against Ferndale in their game in hand.

And, according to Hoopa head coach Glenn Moore, his team appears to be peaking at an opportune time.

“They’re playing well together,” the head coach said. “They’re starting to come into their own. They’re a good team and they’re starting to figure it out.”

Savannah Colegrove pitched both wins, striking out nine in 14 innings work.

She also was 3-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap with two doubles and three RBIs.

Naschewen Hunsucker and Beyonce Bussell each also had big days in the sweep.

Hunsucker hit a home run and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game, after hitting a double and driving home two runs in the opener.

Bussell had three hits in each game, as well as an RBI in the opener.

“We played really well on both sides of the ball,” Moore said. “Defensively we pulled three double plays.”

Junior Jasmine Kinney had two unassisted double plays at first base.

The Warriors will play at the Arcata tournament on Friday and Saturday.
