It was a big week for St. Bernard’s in both baseball and softball, as they took control of the Little 4 with some keys wins.
And two of their athletes in particular led the way, with senior Alley Del Grande and sophomore Bode Joyner impressing enough to earn each of them Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week honors.
Team of the Week honors, meanwhile, go to the McKinleyville softball team, which could very well be the team of the season.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
St. Bernard’s Baseball, Sophomore
It’s hard to believe Joyner is still a sophomore the way he’s been playing.
Last week, he was the star for the Crusaders on both sides of the ball in a key L4 win over Ferndale, pitching a complete-game two-hitter and blasting a bases-clearing double to break a late tie.
He leads his team this year in batting average (.378), RBIs (19) and doubles (six) and has been a force on the mound, with an ERA of 0.89.

Ally Del Grande
St. Bernard’s Softball, Senior
Del Grande pitched all three wins for the Crusaders last week, as they took control of the Little 4.
The senior standout struck out 17 over the three games, while also making some noise at the plate, finishing with six hits in Saturday’s doubleheader.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Pound for pound, no baseball or softball team has been more impressive this season than the Panthers.
On Tuesday, they improved to 12-0 overall and 9-0 in the Big 5 with a sweep of Fortuna, to go with an important three-game sweep of close rivals Arcata last week.
The Panthers are also now the top-ranked Division-IV team in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps.
