Corsairs up to third in GVC after road split

The College of the Redwoods women moved into a tie for third in the conference softball standings with a doubleheader split at Butte on Friday.

And for the second straight weekend, the Corsairs rallied from an opening defeat to take the nightcap, losing game one 8-2 before winning 3-1.

With the split, the CR women are 2-2 in the Golden Valley Conference and 6-12 overall.

They play at conference leaders Feather River (4-0, 9-13) on Saturday, where a sweep will see the Corsairs tie the Golden Eagles in the standings.

The Corsairs will then play 10 of their final 14 games at home after traveling for their opening 20 games, beginning with doubleheaders against Lassen and Butte next weekend.

Friday’s split was the second straight for the Corsairs to begin conference play.

Adriana Chavez had a huge game in the nightcap, finishing 4-for-4 with an RBI, as CR rallied from an early one-run deficit.

The visitors took the lead with two runs in the top of the third and added one more in the fourth, and that was more than enough for pitcher Lindsey Scott and a CR defense that played error-free ball.

Lily Peterson also had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3, while Amy Reyes was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Becca Tripp, Juliana Ortega-Miranda and Dakota Small rounded out a 12-hit team performance with a hit each.

Butte dropped to 1-3 in the GVC and 5-15 overall.

In the opener, seven different CR players had a hit, but the home team took control of the game with three runs in the third and five more in the fourth.

Ashley Stockwell took the loss in the circle.

CR baseball, meanwhile, will host Butte for two games on Saturday at Bomber Field in Eureka, with first pitch set for noon.
