Crusaders advance to ACA semifinals

Not this time.

The Crusaders avenged an earlier loss to Colusa with a third straight win at the American Christian Academy baseball tournament in Redding on Friday.

St. Bernard’s shut out the RedHawks 9-0 in a rain-shortened game to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round at the 32-team tournament.

The win came against the same team that edged St. Bernard’s 3-2 at the Fort Bragg tournament last week.

Caleb Ruiz continued to impress on the mound for the Crusaders, who improved to 7-1.

The team’s lone senior pitched a complete-game shutout, while going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs.

Lane Thrap also made some noise at the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while freshman Nick Dugan continued to look comfortable at the varsity level, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Colusa, which also lost to Arcata at the ACA tournament on Friday, dropped to 9-3.

The Crusaders will play University Prep out of Redding in Saturday’s semifinal at 1:40 p.m.

St. Bernard’s defeated both Willows and Gridley in tournament play on Friday and has now won five straight.

Arcata also remained undefeated at the tournament with a 10-0 win over Mt. Shasta on Friday.
