Redwoods softball finally opens the season at Foothill

It took a few weeks longer than anticipated, but College of the Redwoods finally got the softball season started with a doubleheader at Foothill on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the Corsairs, the early-season rustiness was evident on a young team, which lost both games to an Owls squad that had already played seven games coming in.

The CR women fell 8-0 in the opener and 12-4 in the nightcap.

“We saw a lot of potential and a lot of things to work on for the future,” CR head coach Maggie White said.

In the opener, the Owls scored five runs in the bottom of the second to pull away.

Ashley Stockwell took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, giving up two earned runs in four innings, while walking four and striking out three.

Defensively, the Corsairs committed four errors, while managing just a pair of hits offensively, one each from Pheobe Marsh and Bronwyn Gilfillan.

The CR women enjoyed more production at the plate in the second game, scoring four times on three hits.

Amy Reyes was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, as the The CR women scored three of their runs in the fifth.

Juliana Ortega-Miranda and Marsh each also finished with a hit, with Ortega-Miranda and Lily Peterson each driving in a run.

A good Foothill team improved to 8-1 on the season with the sweep.

The Corsairs will continue their road trip on Friday, playing a pair of games at Santa Rosa JC, one against the host school and one against Gavilan.

First pitch is set for 10 a.m. and noon.
