By Ray Hamill — They’ve been threatening to hit the century mark in points in recent weeks, and on Wednesday night they finally did it.

The Fortuna boys opened the North Coast Section Division-IV playoffs with their most impressive offensive performance of the season, rolling to a 106-73 win over visiting Fort Bragg and marching into the quarterfinals with ease.

The home team took control of the contest early and never allowed the Timberwolves into the game.

The Huskies stormed out to a quick 22-4 lead as the visitors had no answer for their pinpoint shooting, and had stretched the advantage to 30-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Fortuna’s Fernando Atilano scored 15 points in Wednesday’s win.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second quarter, and it wasn’t just the usual suspects contributing.

Fernando Atilano had a big game, providing a notable spark in the first half and finishing the game with 15 points, while Branson Gans finished with 12 rebounds.

Brandyn Martinez and Deadon Taylor also had some big minutes, as head coach Tony Miles went to his bench with no notable letdown.

Brandyn Martinez was one of several Fortuna players to contribute off the bench on Wednesday.

The win is the 14th straight for the Huskies, who are now 27-1 on the season, and sets up a Big 5 rematch in Saturday’s quarterfinal at home to Del Norte.

The Warriors defeated Middletown 72-42 in Crescent City to advance.

Drew Gillette scored a team-high 25 points for Fortuna, while Zac Claus finished with 21 points, including eight straight points on three baskets late in the second quarter as the home team pulled out to a 32-point lead.
