The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team broke out of a recent slump with an impressive 77-59 win over Feather River in Eureka on Saturday afternoon.
Darienne Kartes led an inspired CR performance with 20 points, one of five players to score in double digits for the home team.
“Today was the the day!” CR head coach Jain Tuey said. “The girls came out energized and excited to go after Feather River.”
The Corsairs had to overcome a slow start, and found themselves trailing by six after the opening quarter, but outscored the visitors in each of the final three periods.
Trailing by four at halftime, the CR women exploded for 32 points in the third quarter, with all five starters nailing at least one 3-pointer in the period, on the way to opening up a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
“We went into the third confident and knowing we had a lot of game left, and we were patient in our offense and our shots started falling,” Tuey said. “I’m very proud of how we played today, and it felt good to put all the pieces together and get a solid win.”
Bree Northern, Bobbi Purify and Jayden Johnson each finished with 14 points in the win, as the Corsairs ended a seven-game conference losing streak.
Abiona Katri added 12 points.
With the win, CR improved to 1-7 in the Golden Valley Conference and 6-15 overall.
Feather River dropped to 3-5 and 12-10.
Feather River 73, Redwoods 58
The Corsairs battled hard but remained winless on the season with a loss at home to Feather River on Saturday.
Logan Thrap paced the home team with 18 points, while Elysha Jackson finished with 14, as CR dropped to 0-24 on the year and 0-8 in the GVC.
“The game was overall one of our better games as a team so far in conference,” CR interim head coach Darren Turpin said. “We are applying what we can execute in practice, and different players have been stepping up being more productive.
“I am pleased with the growth of this team throughout conference play.”
Feather River improved to 5-3 in conference and 13-8 overall.
