The Fortuna Huskies claimed their second straight Division-IV North Coast Section championship at Dublin HS on Saturday, defeating top seed Moreau Catholic 61-35.
The No. 6 Huskies knocked off the top three seeded teams on three consecutive weekends to claim the title, the school’s fourth ever.
And it was the veteran players who led the way, with a dominating display along both lines and all nine of Fortuna’s touchdowns scored by seniors.
Quarterback Zac Claus and running back Joey Pontes each ran in for three touchdowns, while Travis Lourenzo ran in for two more and Jason Besanceney added one.
It was also the 10th straight playoff win for the Huskies, who won the 5-A state title a year ago, and many of the seniors closed out their high school careers without ever losing a postseason game.
The playoff run was particularly impressive, coming on the heels of an 0-3 Big 4 campaign in October.
In an offensive powered game, the two teams combined to score on the opening six possessions of the game, with the Mariners answering the call every time Fortuna surged ahead.
Mariners running back Fresh Ison caused the Huskies some serious problems early on, scoring his team’s first three TDs.
But the Fortuna defense, which has stepped up for the playoff run, came up big once again, settling into the game and holding the Mariners to just two touchdowns over the final three quarters.
