By Ray Hamill — Several Humboldt-Del Norte League football players are featured among the statistical leaders in the North Coast Section, including St. Bernard’s quarterback Will Omey.
Omey leads all NCS divisions in total offensive yards per game, with 300.4.
The Crusaders junior is also ninth in the section in rushing yards per game with 118.2, and 14th in passing yards per game with 178.8, which is also second best among Division-IV quarterbacks.
And he’s not the only local player included among the statistical leaders in the section.
Eureka quarterback Cruz Montana is enjoying an outstanding senior campaign, and is sixth in the NCS in passing yards per game with 225.1, which is also second best among D-III quarterbacks.
Montana is also 11th in total yards per game with 225.2.
Among receivers, Hoopa Valley’s Carlos Aguilar is ninth in receiving yards with 86.4 a game, while St. Bernard’s Justin Hagler is 19th with 67 yards a game.
In total scoring, Eureka receiver/kicker Tony Barreno is 16th in the NCS with 10.4 points a game, just ahead of St. Bernard’s Lane Thrap (17th with 10.3 points per game) and Omey (10.2 points a game).
Barreno is also eighth overall in PATs, with 37, while Thrap is also among the leaders on the defensive side of the ball, with his five interceptions now 12th best in the section.
Eureka’s Zach Reed is 18th best in the NCS with four picks.
McKinleyville’s Kyler Carr, meanwhile, is fourth in the section with 109 tackles (12.1 per game), five spots ahead of Eureka’s Tyce Mullins, who has 92 tackles (10.2 a game).
On special teams, Eureka teammate Isley Tulmau is 15th best in the section with 13.3 yards average per punt return, while Ferndale’s Landon Gomes is sixth best among kickoff returners with a 25.9 average, four spots ahead of teammate Cody Collings’ 22.9 yards a return.
Clearly the Cats are doing something right on special teams.
And they’re not the only H-DN team doing so.
McKinleyville’s Caleb Martinez is 15th on kickoff returns with a 20-yard average, while St. Bernard’s Luke Fairfield is 16th with 19.9 yards a return.
Fairfield also has 299 total yards on 15 returns, 14th best in the NCS, five spots behind Hoopa’s William Reynolds, who has an impressive 347 yards on just six returns.
These stats reflect only teams that include their stats online. Teams such as Fortuna and Del Norte do not.
