It was a disappointing night on the volleyball courts for a pair of Big 5 teams on Wednesday, with Arcata and Del Norte both bowing out of the North Coast Section playoffs at the first hurdle.
Playing in the Division-IV bracket, both teams fell in straight sets.
The No. 12 seed Tigers lost to No. 5 University in San Francisco, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14.
The No. 13 Del Norte girls also traveled for their opening round game, losing at No. 4 Justin-Siena in Napa, 25-21, 25-10, 25-19.
University will play Justin-Siena in the next round.
Arcata closes out the season 22-13.
The two local schools join Eureka in falling at the first hurdle in postseason play, after the Loggers lost to Acalanes in straight sets on Tuesday night in Division-III play.
There is now just one remaining Humboldt-Del Norte-League team in the volleyball playoffs, with No. 4 St. Bernard’s hosting No. 5 Emery in the Division-VI bracket on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Both teams had a first-round bye.
