By Ray Hamill — Saturday’s local prep soccer action includes a couple of big games featuring top of the table teams.
In girls’ action, the Eureka Loggers will try to take a big step toward retaining the title they won a year ago, when they travel to play Arcata, which is deadlocked with Fortuna for second in the league standings.
A win over the Tigers (3-1-1) would leave the Eureka girls (5-0) in a very commanding position halfway through league play, having also defeated Fortuna (3-1-1).
The game at Arcata High gets under way at 11 a.m.
The Fortuna girls will try to keep pace with the league leaders when they host South Fork.
The Huskies have won three straight, including wins over McKinleyville and Arcata.
In boys action, meanwhile, Del Norte (3-0-1) will host St. Bernard’s as the Warriors try to keep pace with a high-flying Fortuna team.
The Huskies are top of the table, having won all three league games, but Del Norte is unbeaten in its first five league contests and right in the thick of things.
The two teams won’t meet until October, but a win for the Warriors would keep the pressure on the league leaders, who are scheduled to host South Fork on Saturday.
The Arcata boys, meanwhile, will host Eureka at 1 p.m., while the St. Bernard’s girls also travel to Crescent city.
