The Fortuna Huskies appear to be getting hot at an opportune time.
With league play just under way, the Fortuna girls posted one of their most impressive wins of the volleyball season on Tuesday night, knocking off a strong McKinleyville team in four sets.
Senior Jordyn Quen led the way with 17 kills, as the Huskies reversed the score from the previous meeting between the two teams back in late August.
“I think we’ve made a lot of growth over the course of the season,” head coach Lynsey Adams said. “They’re starting to be confident with each other, and they’re starting to understand everyone’s role on the floor, and to trust each other, which is a big thing in volleyball.”

Senior Bailey Parker and junior Kenzie Hall each added eight kills and three aces in the win, as the Huskies improved to 1-1 in the Big 5 and 6-10 overall.
And, according to Adams, it was a hard fought game.
“The girls on both sides of the net were definitely fighting for it,” the Fortuna coach said. “Our girls looked like they were having fun and relaxed, and when they’re relaxed, they play better.”
Parker and Quen have been consistently leading the way for the Huskies through the early season, although the coach was quick to add that other players have been playing their roles.
“Some of the younger (players) have stepped up and filled some big big shoes,” Adams said. “We have so many people who have been stepping up, and it’s not always the same person.”
And according to the coach, it’s also a fun group to coach.
“They’re playing really scrappy, and they’re going for everything,” Adams said. “It’s fun to watch.”
Both the Huskies and Panthers have a bye from league play on Thursday, while Arcata gets set to host Eureka, with first serve earlier than usual at 5 p.m.
