By Ray Hamill — Mic Moulton won more than just a track championship at the Redwood Acres Raceway last weekend.
The Eureka native, who claimed his fifth overall Mid-City Motor World Late Models season title, including his third straight, now sits alongside some of the track’s all-time legends.
“It’s kind of cool,” Moulton said. “(Track writer) Matt Sullivan shared with me that I tied Jim Walker and Larry Pries for most premier division championships.”
The legendary Paul Peeples holds the record for most titles in one division with six, a number Moulton could match with a championship next season.
“Those are some impressive guys to be stacked up with,” Moulton said.
Whether he’ll return next year remains to be seen, especially with the commitment necessary.
Moulton has a five-year-old son, Jack, and wants to spend more time with his family.
“Pretty soon the focus is going to change to being a dad, and making sure I don’t miss out on any of the dad stuff,” he said. “But who knows, we may have one more run in us.”
Moulton dominated the main events this season, winning five of the seven, but the race for the championship came down to just 11 points, the tightest of all six divisions at the raceway.
David Henderson finished second, taking Saturday’s final main event, his first win of the season.
“The exciting part is it came down to the final race,” Moulton said. “I was happy to see David win one.”
