The Arcata Tigers got their first win of the season in a frustrating game at Willits on Friday night, while the Del Norte Warriors continued to roll with their fourth straight win.
The Tigers traveled south to Willits and came away with a 22-20 victory, while Del Norte topped Brookings-Harbor 35-0 in Crescent City.
A young Arcata team that was missing five starters, was forced to start several freshmen and sophomores.
Worse than that, according to head coach Jamal Jones, they also had to battle some very questionable officiating.
“I felt like our guys did a lot of good things, but it was the worst officiating I’ve ever seen,” Jones said. “Just stuff I’ve never seen in my life.
“It was a bad, bad football game.”
Kien Mazzotti, Everett Halikas and Matt Robinson scored the Tigers three touchdowns.
And Jones said he was proud of effort of his players and the manner in which the younger players stepped up for the occasion.
“We had five starters out, all seniors, so we had a lot of young guys,” the coach said. “They had an opportunity to crumble when things didn’t go their way, and they didn’t, they stepped up.”
The Tiges have a bye next week before beginning league play.
The Del Norte Warriors, meanwhile, made it four straight wins to start the season, officially topping their win total from all of last season.
The win was also the second straight shutout for Del Norte.
