The Corsairs got their first win of the season in volleyball on Wednesday night, running out to a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-17) at Mendocino College in Ukiah.
And College of the Redwoods head coach Petra Lorenzi was encouraged with the performance of her players.
“It took us a game to get going, but it was a good night for us,” the coach said.
Eureka’s Jessica Simon had a big night in the win, finishing with 12 aces, including a momentum-building six-ace run in game three as the the Corsairs took control of the contest.
“That really just opened it up for us,” Lorenzi said.
Ariana Gallegos also had a big night in the win, finishing with seven aces and 33 assists, while returning sophomore Elise Wilson led the way with a dominating performance and finished with 26 digs.
“There were a lot of players where we really saw what their potential could be,” the coach said.
Simon, Alondra Ledezma and Ashlynn Maddaeux each finished with nine kills, with Ledezma “coming out on fire, and really set the tone for us on the offensive side,” the coach said.
The Corsairs (1-2) will travel for a pair of games in Oregon early next week.
