By Ray Hamill — The Ferndale Wildcats still have some unfinished business to take care of as they look to close out a dominating regular season with a big performance on Friday night.
The Cats improved to 9-0 with an 82-12 win at McKinleyville last weekend, scoring the most points by an H-DNL 11-player program in at least 22 years since MaxPreps began keeping records.
That secured at least a share of the Little 4 championship, a title they can win outright with a victory over Arcata on Friday night.
The Cats rolled over the Tigers 72-0 in Ferndale three weeks ago, so it would take a herculean effort from the Arcata players to reverse that this week.
However, with a possible share of the conference crown on the line, the Arcata players won’t lack motivation.
The Wildcats, of course, remain No. 1 in our Power Rankings for the 11th straight week and they have held that spot wire to wire this season.
And in reality, no other team has come close to knocking them from their perch all season long.
But we do have a slight change at No. 2 this week.
Fortuna’s 26-18 win over St. Bernard’s last weekend kept the Huskies’ hopes of at least a shared championship alive.
The loss was the first of the year for St. Bernard’s and leaves both schools tied for the conference lead with identical 4-1 records, with their only losses coming against each other.
And that means both schools are tied at No. 2 in this week’s Power Rankings, with Fortuna moving up one spot from the No. 3 position they have held for the past four weeks.
The Del Norte Warriors, meanwhile, hold steady at No. 4 for the fifth straight week after their 7-0 win over Eureka last week.
The Warriors will close out the regular season at St. Bernard’s on Saturday afternoon, and with possible North Coast Section playoff inclusion on the line they have plenty to play for in addition to pride.
The Tigers round out our top five in the Power Rankings.
