Different weekend, same story for College of the Redwoods football.
A lack of consistency on offense saw Redwoods drop its second straight game to start the new season on Saturday night.
CR traveled to Los Altos Hills to play Foothill College and lost a low-scoring game 13-3.
The game was tied in the third quarter but the Owls closed out stronger and got the win, in large part because they were able to keep the visitors out of the end zone all night.
The good news for CR head coach Jason White and the players is the team defense turned in another strong performance, but a very new-look offense that has just one returning starter this season was unable to match that.
“We played well on defense, and on offense we made a lot of mistakes again,” White said. “We made some big plays but never finished (drives).
“It was very similar to the Sac City game (last week). Both defenses were good and both offenses were not good.”
The home team managed just one touchdown in the win, early in the fourth quarter, but that would prove to be enough in a tight game.
With the loss, Redwoods dropped to 0-2, and it’s been a disappointing start to life in the more competitive National Division after moving up from the American Division this past offseason.
After Saturday’s loss, White had a heart to heart with his team.
“There comes a time you’ve got to perform, and that’s kind of where we are right now,” the head coach said. “We’ve got to sit down and do an analysis and see where we’re at. We’ve got to figure out a way to make it work.”
In his second start with the team, quarterback Quinton Buckland was unable to get much going with the offense, although the blame lies with the entire unit.
“Our passing game was sporadic. Some times we were pretty good and a lot of times we weren’t,” the head coach said. “And our running game, we’re one block away every time, and that’s become tiresome as a coach.”
CR also started 0-2 three years ago in White’s first season in charge and the team would go on to win seven straight games.
That, however, is less likely while competing against National Division teams, and this year’s team has now let two good opportunities for wins slip away.
“We’ve had two games that we could easily have won, and in both games one play was the difference,” White said.
Redwoods will try to bounce back next week when Diablo Valley College travels to the Redwood Bowl.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
